In The Education of Henry Adams, the author contrasts the suddenly outdated Romantic ideals of his immediate ancestors with the way the failings of his upbringing have left him adrift in an increasingly technological, disordered and even chaotic world. Adams argues that the political and social challenges of the late nineteenth century are rooted in this collapse of traditional values, expectations and ideals.

It is the effort to reconcile the Romantic ideal of creative power as epitomized by the Virgin Mary with the power of disunity as exemplified by the Dynamo which gives the Education its prescient view of the century ahead.
